The Sciences

We explore the planet.

Earth Science

Students in grade four and up participate in an earth science class that incorporates studies of biology, marine science, geology and environmental science.  An overriding theme that runs throughout the course is the importance of protecting our planet and making responsible choices that preserve our fragile ecosystems.  During their study of marine science last year, students observed and investigated a variety of marine animals at our local aquariums.

They went kayaking through mangroves to study life in one of our area’s most beautiful ecosystems. They dissected squids to learn about the anatomy of a cephalopod and lionfish to examine an invasive species in the Tampa Bay region. Students learn about the geology of Florida and the United States, how animals have adapted to changing conditions throughout time and how science affects the environment in which we live.

Discovery

A highlight of our program for our youngest learners is their Discovery class, a hands-on, multi sensory exploration of the world around them. Children rotate at their own pace from center to center to participate in activities that are both science and nature focused. They sink their hands into earth to touch worms and create etchings of leaves they’ve collected from outside.

Children finger paint, build with clay and make their own puppets. Discovery class permits children the freedom to explore – to find artistic inspiration from the nature that surrounds them and from their own imaginations.
